Most people have an overbite, which happens when the upper teeth overlap the lower ones. Dentists and orthodontists will tell you that a small overbite is acceptable. Overbites beyond that can cause problems over time, including jaw pain and accelerated tooth wear.
One treatment option is to use braces to fix your bad overbite, but can Invisalign fix your overbite? Wilson and Hendrickson Orthodontics offers Invisalign for overbites and other dental problems. These nearly invisible clear aligners can correct your teeth without disrupting your lifestyle.
What Is a Bad Bite?
A bad bite, called a malocclusion, refers to teeth that don’t line up properly due to the teeth being out of place or the entire jaw being misaligned. Dental issues are labeled as certain classifications of malocclusions.
For example, an overbite is a class 2 malocclusion. An underbite is a class 3 malocclusion. The American Dental Association estimates that up to 70% of dental disorders in children are overbites. Children can get overbites from thumb sucking, overusing pacifiers, or even genetics from their parents.
Will Invisalign Fix My Overbite?
Does Invisalign help an overbite? What other Invisalign bite corrections are there? Invisalign can correct overbites and several other dental issues, including:
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Deep Bite
- Gap Teeth
- Crowded Teeth
- Open Bite
Does Invisalign work with an overbite if it’s severe? Not always, which is why you must get evaluated by a professional orthodontist before getting clear aligners. We will help determine whether Invisalign is best for your bad bite.
How Does Invisalign Fix an Overbite?
How does Invisalign fix an overbite? Clear aligners work much like braces by applying gentle pressure to move your teeth. Unlike traditional metal braces or ceramic braces (clear braces), Invisalign’s special acrylic material contours to your teeth, so they’re difficult to see.
Invisalign trays are removable, so you can eat or drink whatever you want. You can also brush and floss your teeth normally before returning the trays to your mouth.
Clear aligners move your teeth in certain ways with each set of trays. Patients are given several sets of trays (each set has an upper and lower tray) and change out each set after 1-2 weeks. The trays are worn in sequence, moving the teeth with precision.
How Long Will I Wear Invisalign?
How long does Invisalign take to fix an overbite? That depends on the number of dental issues we need to fix and the severity of those issues. Mild cases may only need six months to fix their teeth. Others may take up to 15 months or more.
The average time patients spend in Invisalign is 9-15 months. We can tell you how long you may need clear aligners during your first visit with us. Your estimated treatment time is part of your orthodontic treatment plan with Wilson and Hendrickson Orthodontics.
How Do I Get the Best Results From Invisalign?
Unlike braces, clear aligners are removable. They must be worn at least 22 hours a day for the best results. That means you must be diligent with wearing your clear aligners to get the best results.
Remove your Invisalign to eat and drink, then brush your teeth if you are able, or rinse with plain water if you aren’t. Be sure to rinse your clear aligners before returning them to your mouth. This reduces the amount of plaque, bacteria, and food particles in your mouth.
Clean your Invisalign once daily using clear aligner cleaning tablets. We don’t recommend using denture tablets with “scrubbing” power because they have abrasive particles that can cause microabrasions on your Invisalign trays and leave them cloudy.
Change your trays according to the schedule we provide, but do not throw out your old set of aligners. You may need them in case we need to step back in your treatment, or you lose or damage a tray. Keep your trays in a protective case when they aren’t in your mouth to ensure they stay safe.
We will see you about every 6-8 weeks to check your progress and issue new sets of Invisalign trays. Let us know of any concerns, questions, or issues you may have, and we will address them right away.
It’s important to be responsible with your Invisalign clear aligners. The better you follow the rules, the faster you will get the smile you deserve!
